Democratic congressmen from Massachusetts asked U.S. President Joe Biden to remove Cuba from the list of sponsors of terrorism, a designation issued at the end of Donald Trump's administration, The Hill newspaper reported.

Members of Congress criticized Trump's inclusion of Cuba on that arbitrary and unilateral list of State Sponsors of Terrorism and urged Biden to revoke it.

"It was a vindictive action taken by the Trump administration in January 2021 when it left office, and the policy should have changed by now," Democrats Jim McGovern and Ayanna Pressley wrote in a December letter that was not made public until now, according to the newspaper.

"In fact, Cuba and the United States have a bilateral counterterrorism cooperation agreement in place," the two congressmen stressed in the missive, also signed by Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, and Representatives Seth Moulton, Lori Trahan and Stephen Lynch.

The Democrats insisted on Biden's unfulfilled campaign promises on reviewing some of the coercive measures adopted by Trump (2017-2021) against Cuba.

"As a candidate for president, you promised to address a new engagement with Cuba and return to the policy initiated during the Obama-Biden administration, and we support you in this commitment," they reminded the current occupant of the Oval Office.

Trump included the Caribbean country on that list during his last week in office, and this imposed severe restrictions on the island's access to international financial markets, which limits its ability to do business with other countries and entities, which are forced to choose between trading with the U.S. or Cuba, the article added.

The New York court grand jury investigating the case of the 2016 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels by Donald Trump recently voted to indict him on criminal charges.

The indictment makes the former president the first former president to face criminal charges in U.S. history.

Michael D. Cohen, Trump's lawyer and troubleshooter who pleaded guilty to federal campaign finance violations in August 2018, admitted that he helped arrange the payment to Daniels, in addition to another payment to a former Playboy model, to help Trump's presidential bid, on Trump's orders.

The payment made to Daniels sought the actress' silence ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Faced with the Court's accusation, Trump's response was immediate: "Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history," he said in a statement, according to La Opinión.

Adored by extreme right-wing groups and followers of the most irrational conspiracy theories, Trump began his run for the Republican Party's candidacy for the presidency with low scores in the polls.

Some analysts even predicted his defeat against other opponents; however, in the face of the possible indictment by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, the tycoon has climbed in the polls.  According to the Fox News poll, Donald Trump has doubled his lead over Ron DeSantis by 30 percentage points.

In view of the situation created, questions arise in many people.  Does the accusation seek to shut down the former president or catapult him directly to the elections?  Is it a matter of enforcing justice in the United States, for the first time, in the case of a former president?

It happens that when we take a look at the process we find several interesting elements.  It is true that when Trump was campaigning for the presidency, his team negotiated a confidentiality agreement with Daniels, in exchange for $130,000.  However, the payment to the actress was made by Michael Cohen, and he has testified that he obtained the money from his home equity line of credit and that the amount was later reimbursed to him, which can be well exploited by his lawyers.

Another element that may work in favor of the defendant is the lack of precedent.

For more than two centuries, presidents - even those who have been affected by scandals - while in office have had immunity from prosecution, even enjoying that privilege when they leave office.

In U.S. elections, marked by setbacks and low blows to opponents, many things can happen.  In addition, the 45th president of the United States is under indictment for possible crimes of insurrection, withholding classified documents and obstruction of justice in a national security case.

In the face of all that, being indicted for paying for the silence of a porn star doesn't seem so bad.

Wikileaks distributed that information just in time to influence an electorate that already regarded Mrs Clinton somewhat askance.
 
Then come Comey bearing letters and his soul, tiefing up Mrs Clinton's last bit of credibility, and this and the Russians and Wikileaks all occurring just in time to blunt or even soften Mr Trump's crotch-grabbing boasts.
 
So we accept that the Russians through Wikileaks's, together with Comey impacted American voter perception just before an American election;
AND: Trump's people were canoodling with the Russians the entire time!
AND: Trump's people lied about that canoodling.
 
Again comes Comey, investigating the affair, forcing General Flynn, The US Attorney General, hosts of Trumpian lackeys and his son-in-law to admit, that they were part of the "Stolichnaya Breakfast Club"!
 
Trump - who has not been told no since he was four years old - accosted Comey, and begged of him, "Let Flynn go...!"
 
Is that Obstruction of Justice?
 
Mmmmmmmm, depends...
 
It requires a set of compelling circumstances:
 
So, Flynn gets fired.
 
Comey announces investigation.
 
Trump and his people denounce the investigation publicly. Gets the House Intelligence Chairman to call media houses to counteract Comey's claims.
 
Trump calls Comey, asks am I going to jail?
 
Trump meets Comey and says repeat John 3:16, but replace the "only begotten son" with Trump!
 
Trump invites Comey for dinner, says you want to stay at FBI?
 
Trump says drop this investigation!
 
Yes!
 
It's abuse of power, obstruction even bribery.
 
What it lacks is a systematic scheme to frustrate the interests of justice and it is so disorganized that it is hardly a crime.
